It was 9:42 am Sunday morning. Kent stood in front of the audience, hands gripping the podium. He would make a presentation he would never forget. A presentation he is certain not one person in the audience remembers today. It was 1963. His father shared with him a story about a ranch hand who could sleep when the wind blows. Kent delivered the speech flawlessly. There was no applause. And there was no silence either, all his fellow primary children were busy poking each other, sliding in and out of their seats, begging to go to the bathroom and asking if was over yet. Despite such a tough crowd, Kent proudly sat back down, folded his arms, looked to the back of the classroom where his mom and dad smiled proudly. Kent was six years old.
With minor changes, like ages and locations and maybe topic, Kent has repeated that experience countless times. Though he no longer expects his folks to approve from the back of the audience, he has repeated that story about the rancher in one way or another around the world.
In 1985 he won his first international Echo award from the Direct Marketing Association for a direct mail campaign that garnered a 28% response rate. A few years later he won a second and then a third. By the time that number totaled ten, Kent had become a popular speaker being requested to speak at advertising and marketing conferences across the country. His brand of creativity made the presentations entertaining and substantive. Clients such as Zig Ziglar, Nightingale Conant, Franklin Quest and others hired Kent and his teams to develop their marketing materials. At one point he was invited to attend the NSA (National Speakers Association) in Orlando, Florida. He did and everything changed. He realized he was already a professional speaker. As a new member of the NSA, he met and mingled with some of the finest speakers in the world. He refined his approaches and though he prefers to stay closer to home and write, Kent has spoken at conferences and gatherings throughout the US, in Europe, Eastern Europe, South America and Asia. That doesn’t count the countless congregations with whom he shares wit and wisdom from the scriptures. His creative flavor makes messages easy to digest.
